Ho Chi Minh: Ho Chi Minh, real name Nguyen Tất Thanh was a Vietnamese Communist leader and the principal force behind the Vietnamese struggle against the French colonial rule. Ho was familiar with English, a few lingos of Chinese, French, German and Russian other than his local Vietnamese. The city of Ho Chi Minh was named after him.
His armed force was triumphant in the French Indochina War (1946-1954). He led North Vietnam’s struggle to defeat the US-supported government in South Vietnam. In 1954, he became the first president of North Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh was born on May 19, 1890, in the village of Kim Lien in Annam, in central Vietnam.
His dad was a local official appended to the majestic court. Ho was the youngest of the three children. He received his basic education from his father and the local village school. Ho Chi Minh attended the prestigious National Academy School in Hue but did not complete his graduation.
For a short time, he worked as a teacher in a South Annam fishing town before traveling to Saigon, where he got training as a kitchen boy and pastry cook’s assistant and took a course in navigation He moved to Europe in 1911. After World War I, he moved to Paris and was active in socialist organizations into the 1920s.
He visited the Soviet Union to ponder progressive strategies and was sent to China to spread socialism all through Asia. In 1930, Ho Chi Minh founded the Indochinese Communist Party and spent almost a decade living in China and the Soviet Union. Ho was in Vietnam during World War II, where he organized the league for the Independence of Vietnam, called the Viet Minh.

From the period (1942-43), he was jailed by the anti-communist Nationalist Chinese, during which time he took the name, Ho Chi Minh (“He Who Enlightens”). After World War II, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam declaring himself as the President.
He drove the Viet Minh through eight years of underground obstruction against French provincial powers (1946-54).and then turned to guerilla warfare against the anti-communist government in South Vietnam.
“Uncle Ho,” is the image of the socialists’ readiness to forfeit and to bear a war of attrition. He died in 1969, six years before the US withdrew from South Vietnam and the war ended. Many across the country tearfully mourned his death.
His demise day was at first answered to be September 3. The death day was actually September 2, but was changed since it coincided with the National Day as celebrated in Vietnam.Recently, the legislature changed his official passing day to September 2. His embalmed body was put on display in a granite mausoleum modeled after Lenin’s Tomb in Moscow.
In 1975, the Students’ Union of Wadham College, Oxford renamed a college quadrangle from the JCR Quad to the “Ho Chi Minh Quad reflecting student sympathies following the end of the Vietnam War.
Ho Chi Minh was the founder of Vietnamese Communism. He was the very soul of the transformation and of Vietnam’s battle for freedom. His successors depend intensely on his memory to keep alive the soul of unrest in Vietnam.
