Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India. He belonged to a rich Brahmin family. His father, Pandit Motilal Nehru was a great lawyer. He was born in Allahabad in 1889 on 14th November.
He was sent to England at the age of 15 for his higher studies. Then he went to Cambridge University where he took his degree in 1910. He joined law there. He was married to Smt. Kamla Devi at the age of 24.He came to India and started his practice at Allahabad High Court. After he returned to India, he became a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. He traveled the country and joined the struggle for freedom started by Gandhi.

He became the President of the Indian National Congress. He gave up his practice and luxury of life. He joined the non-co-operation movement started by Gandhiji. He went to jail many times.He became a fearless soldier of the liberation struggle.

He determined to bring freedom for his countrymen and for this he struggled hard against country Rule. He wanted to achieve complete freedom for the country.

On 15th August’1947, India became free and Nehru became the first Prime minister of India. He was the maker of modern India.

Nehru was a great leader. India made great progress under his guidance. He shaped India’s destiny during his seventeen years when he was the Prime Minister He started the process of economic planning.

He struggled against major problems of the country that were poverty, unemployment, and backwardness. He desired India to be a great power and industrialized country.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was a true lover of peace. He laid down the five principles called panchaSheela. He believed that if all the nations follow these principles, peace could be maintained worldwide.

He was busy with the national and international problems. He was a good writer and wrote books, ‘The Discovery of India’ and “The Glimpses of World History.’

He loved children a lot. Children also loved him and called him ‘Chacha Nehru’. As a sign of his love for children, his birthday is celebrated as The Children’s Day’ every year with great enthusiasm throughout the country.

In 1962, China attacked India. This worried him a lot. On 27th May’1964, he died due to a heart attack. It was a big loss of nation in losing its first prime minister.
