Ramchandra Shukla: Acharya Ramchandra Shukla was born on October 4, 1884, in the village of Agona in Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father, Pt. Chandrawali Shukla, was a Sarayuparin Brahmin and a supervisor, Kanungo. He discouraged his son from learning Hindi because he had a bias against Hindi in favour of Urdu.

Ramchandra Shuklaji, however, had a lifelong interest in Hindi. He started learning Hindi on his own and soon became proficient in the language. He also began writing Hindi poetry and essays in his student days.

After completing his intermediate education, Shuklaji took up a job as a teacher. However, he soon realised that his true calling was to write and teach Hindi literature. He left his job and joined the Nagari Pracharini Sabha in Kashi, where he worked as a research scholar.

In 1919, Ramchandra Shuklaji was appointed as a Hindi teacher at the Hindu University in Varanasi. He later became the head of the Hindi department at the university. He remained in this position until his death in 1941.

Ramchandra Shuklaji was a prolific writer and critic. He wrote extensively on Hindi literature, philosophy, and culture. His most famous works include “Charan Vinod”, “Radhakrishna Das”, “Chintamani Triveni”, “Surdas”, “Ras Mimamsa”, and “History of Hindi Literature”. He also edited several important Hindi works, including “Bhramar Geetasar”, “Bharatendu Sahitya”, “Tulsi Granthavali”, and “Jayasi Granthavali”.

Ramchandra Shuklaji was a versatile genius. He was a gifted essayist, critic, and thinker. He is considered the first major critic of Hindi literature. His “History of Hindi Literature” is considered to be a classic work of scholarship. Shuklaji was also a staunch nationalist and a champion of the Hindi language and literature. He played a major role in the development of Hindi as a modern language.
